Bed wetting in children younger than 5 or 6 years of age is so common that we don’t recommend starting a special treatment program. While young we recommend children wear GoodNites® pull-ups to bed at night and the mattress be covered in waterproof sheets. If accidents are irregular or infrequent, use KIDS ‘N’ PETS® Stain & Odor Remover to clean up the urine stains and odors.

In general, it may be helpful to avoid caffeine and other diuretics such as soda pop, citrus fruit juices, chocolate, coffee and tea at night. Limiting fluid intake at bed time may also help. And it is always a good idea to have your child go to the bathroom before bedtime. But it’s important to know not to make your child go to bed thirsty or dehydrated. In many cases, children will still wet the bed anyway.

If your children are older than 6 and still experiencing enuresis, consult your family physician or pediatrician. We recommend avoiding medication until it is a last resort. Changing a child’s sleep patterns via behavior modification takes time and patience but often offers the best chance for success.

At all times, avoid shame and humiliation. Have patience with this stage in your child’s life and give lots of praise and encouragement. Let them know that they are not the only ones. Most likely there are other family members that experienced enuresis and it is helpful to let the child know this.
